Overview

This is a 14-day self-guided bike tour throughout Lithuania. The total distance by bike is 865 km. The route includes non-busy roads, bicycle roads, paved roads, forest paths, and gravel paths.

Plan of the trip:

On the 1st day, you will arrive in Vilnius and stay overnight.

On the 2nd day, you will explore Vilnius region (distance by bike – 40 km.).

On the 3rd day, you will jump to the train and go to Trakai, from there ride to Užutrakis, Senieji Trakai and at the end of the day take the train to Varėna (distance by bike – 90 km.).

On the 4th day, you will take a ride from Varėna to Merkinė and Birštonas (distance by bike – 100 km.).

On the 5th day, you will ride from Birštonas to Kaunas, then to Pažaislis monastery, and back to Kaunas where you will stay overnight (distance by bike – 90 km.).

On the 6th day, you will leave Kaunas to go to Kačerginė, Zapyškis. Then, you will take the ferry to Kulautuva and ride back to Kaunas. The bus will take you from Kaunas to Nida (distance by bike – 40 km.).

On the 7th day you will take a long ride from Nida to Klaipėda, then to Palanga (distance by bike – 80 km.).

On the 8th day, you will ride from Palanga to Kretinga, Plungė, Plateliai and stay there overnight (distance by bike – 85 km.).

On the 9th day, you will leave Plateliai to go to Telšiai and at the end of the day take the train to Vilnius (distance by bike – 80 km.).

On the 10th day, you will explore Vilnius (distance by bike – 50 km.).

On the 11th day, you will take the train to Ignalina and explore the region (distance by bike – 80 km.).

On the 12th day, you will ride to Zarasai (distance by bike – 80 km.).

On the 13th day – ride around Visaginas and at the end of the day take the train to Vilnius (distance by bike – 50 km.).

On the 14th day – a departure from Vilnius.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Vilnius - the capital of Lithuania, located in the center of Europe. The city is both contemporary and ancient, rich in architecture with historical monuments, cultural heritage, and has to offer various thematic festivals and entertainments. It is considered that Vilnius is one of the greenest European capitals - a compact city filled with parks and squares.
  • Trakai- picturesque Trakai national park with pine forests and lakes, and the ancient Lithuanian capital - the residence of Grand Dukes of the country.
  • Dzūkija National Park – the largest protected area in Lithuania and the country's most extensive forest. During the tour in Dzūkija national park, you will visit the traditional village Mančiagirė, which was found in the Stone Age, Lithuanian canyon Mančiagirė near the river Ūla, and the magical Ūla eye that has healing water, Zervynos ethnographic village.
  • Merkinė - one of the most important towns in the XIV century, loved by famous king Vladislav Vaza. We offer to visit Merkinė hills, the main square, and the observation tower.
  • Kačerginė, Kulautuva, and Zapyškis - three little towns located by the Nemunas riverside. Together they make a resort area of Kaunas district, which was famous during the interwar period for the pristine beauty of nature and the curative powers of the health resources they can offer. Today it is an area with exceptional tranquillity, silence, and coziness.
  • Kaunas - temporary capital of Lithuania. Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania, which was chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2022. And as a Capital of Culture 2022, Kaunas is changing: from the TEMPORARY CAPITAL to CONTEMPORARY. The city is famous for its Interwar architecture which was awarded the European Heritage Label and is on its way to UNESCO. Kaunas is the only city in the world where the style of the buildings has survived to the present day.
  • Pažaislis Monastery - one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture in North and East Europe.
  • Birštonas - one of the oldest balneology resorts in Lithuania.
  • Palanga - the largest and most famous Lithuanian seaside resort on the Baltic shore, 25 km north from Klaipėda. The resort is very popular because of the broad and spacious bar of clean sand with a long chain of undulating dunes which makes it ideal for sunbathing. The temperature here is higher than the annual average in Lithuania, the clouds here are clearer and the sun's radiation is greater. The amounts of ozone and iodine in the air are relatively high. The town is surrounded by pine forests and stands between two hills that are associated with many legends.
  • Curonian Spit - a pearl of the Baltics, an adornment of the seacoast. The Curonian Spit is a narrow peninsula with sand dunes, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. By the end of 2000, the Curonian Spit territory was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape object.
  • Nida - one of Lithuania’s representatives of the cultural sites and is included in Neringa’s administrative center. Most famous places in Nida: Parnidis dune, Thomas Mann museum, Amber Gallery, Ben sculpture, Fisherman museum, Nida lighthouse, Nida promenade, Wecekrug dune.
  • Žemaitija National Park - the center of the national park is the Lake Plateliai, which is the deepest, the largest, and most picturesque lake in Samogitia. Wonderful nature, rich history, and distinctive cultural property reveal the uniqueness of the ethnographic region of Samogitia.
  • Cold war museum - located in the former Soviet Union`s complex of ballistic missile silo launch. From 1963 to 1978, four medium-range ballistic missiles SS-4, armed with 2- megaton power thermonuclear warheads here been deployed there.
  • Aukštaitija National Park - located in Eastern Lithuania. The park has more lakes than anywhere else in the country. Also, there are a lot of archaeological treasures and mounds, and it’s the only place in the world that has both Ethnocosmology and the Ancient Beekeeping museums.

    So many undiscovered places

    Tour was full of nature sites, non touristic places. We were amazed by the beauty of different types of nature such as lake, rivers, forest views.
